SEO, or Search Engine Optimisation is the name given to the process that aims to increase your chances of being found using search engines - Such as Google, Yahoo or Bing.

Despite many company claims that they can guarantee you that "top spot" on Google, or that they will "submit your website to Google to enhance your listing", this is somewhat untrue.

There are processes that can be followed in order to improve your chances of being listed, but no one can guarantee that top spot. There is no magic formula.

• All the search engine companies are continually changing their search algorithms.
  A website that appears top for a particular search phrase may well be listed much lower down a few days later
  
  
• New sites are created every second. They may receive higher priority than yours because of several factors.
  Since Google, Yahoo or Bing (or any other search engine) do not publicise their algorithms (in fact they go at great lengths to keep them secret), No person or company can know the impact.
  
  
• Search engines do not use your website alone in order to determine its position in the rankings
  Factors such as frequency of updates/changes to site content, number of links to your website from other relevant websites and many other things are considered major factors in your listing position.
  
  
• Companies claiming that they will "submit" or "add" your site to Google in order to improve your ranking.
  Whilst it is possible to "submit" your website to search engine providers such as Google, this will not improve your ranking in searches or mean they will crawl/index your website and add to their system any quicker. There are other benefits to submitting your site (called a Sitemap file) however.

The best way of increasing your rankings is to have a content rich website that is frequently changing. Your site should contain useful & relevant information that is fully up to date.

This will convince visitors to return and other sites to believe your website is worth linking to.
